πŸ“ Abstract
Serverless computing has emerged as a dominant paradigm for building scalable, highly available, and costefficient cloud applications by abstracting infrastructure management and enabling event-driven execution models. As organizations increasingly rely on serverless architectures to deploy APIcentric applications, ensuring robust API security has become a critical requirement. API security mechanisms are responsible for protecting backend resources from unauthorized access, data breaches, and malicious attacks, making them a fundamental component of modern cloudnative systems. In the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem, Lambda Authorizers are widely adopted as a flexible and customizable solution for enforcing authentication and authorization at the Amazon API Gateway level. These authorizers enable developers to implement fine-grained access control policies using custom logic, supporting various authorization strategies such as tokenbased, request-based, and claim-based mechanisms. While Lambda Authorizers significantly enhance security, their execution introduces additional performance overhead due to factors such as cold start delays, runtime initialization costs, and the computational complexity of authorization logic. These overheads can negatively impact API response time, particularly in latency-sensitive and hightraffic serverless applications. To address these challenges, this paper presents an extended Lambda Authorizer Benchmarking Tool developed using the AWS Serverless Application Model (SAM) and the Artillery load testing framework. The proposed tool provides a systematic and repeatable approach for evaluating the performance characteristics of Lambda Authorizers under controlled experimental conditions.
