πŸ“ Abstract
Radon (222Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and one of the critical environmental health concerns. Harmful if water is drunk. The current effort intends to evaluate the danger of the radon radiation in water samples obtained from Al-Tuwaitha and its adjacent locations in Iraq which has lengthy history of large-scale nuclear operations. Samples of water were collected periodically and tested using the Alpha Guard detector, the extremely sensitive and dependable equipment for radon measurement. Results indicated that radon levels in the examined areas varied significantly with some of the locations exceeding the permissible limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The regional distribution of radon implies a possible link with geological features, groundwater circulation and nuclear activities in the region. The risk assessment calculations involving the annual effective dose for various groups of the population indicated that certain locations could represent moderate to high health risk notably for the people living in these regions and consuming groundwater as a source for drinking water and domestic usage. These findings stress the need of regular radon monitoring in water sources and implementation of mitigation measures and generating awareness among people to avoid health dangers. Moreover, the research has shown the efficacy of the Alpha Guard detector in measurements of ambient radiation. Further research is recommended to discover the source of elevated radon levels and to create regional standards for water safety in Al-Tuwaitha and related sites.
