This article provides a comprehensive examination of flash flood phenomena in the Himalayas, with a focused study on Himachal Pradesh, India. The study moves beyond a purely physical analysis to explore the interconnected geographical, social and literary dimensions of these increasingly frequent disasters. Geographically, the research investigates the complex of factors driving flash floods, including extreme precipitation, glacial lake outburst floods and the region’s fragile topography. It highlights that while extreme weather events serve as primary triggers, human interventions such as river corridor encroachment and infrastructure development significantly amplify their destructive impact. The social dimension is explored by documenting the profound human cost, including loss of life, displacement and economic devastation, while critically examining the socio-political response that often fails to adequately address the vulnerabilities of marginalised mountain communities. The study also incorporates a literary perspective, drawing upon ecocritical theory to contextualise the crisis within broader narratives of climate change and human-nature relationships. By integrating these multiple aspects, the article demonstrates that flash floods in Himachal Pradesh must be understood not as isolated natural events, but as complex socio-natural disasters shaped by environmental degradation, developmental pressures and cultural narratives. The study ultimately calls for holistic, inclusive and sustainable vindication strategies that respect both ecological sensitivity and community resilience.
