π Abstract
Odissi vocalism, as an integral dimension of the Odissi performing arts tradition of eastern India, embodies a rare synthesis of structured melodic grammar and deeply devotional expressivity. This research article explores the concept of βvoice as vessel of devotionβ within Odissi music, with particular attention to interpretive improvisation as a living practice. Unlike purely compositional or fixed-rendered vocal traditions, Odissi vocalism sustains a dynamic interplay between raga-based discipline and emotive elaboration, where improvisation is not deviation but revelation. The study situates Odissi vocal practice within its historical, aesthetic, and philosophical contexts, examining how improvisational strategies articulate bhakti (devotion), rasa (aesthetic sentiment), and abhinaya (expressive interpretation). It argues that interpretive improvisation in Odissi vocalism functions as a spiritual and aesthetic bridge between performer, text, and listener, transforming musical utterance into devotional embodiment.
