π Abstract
The article offers a critical study of Akash Sarkar's Bengali poetry collection, Shesher Dine (At the End of the Day, ISBN 978-93-94042-34-6). With roots in the border village of Hingalganj, North 24 Parganas, this collection chronicles the thought process of a youth at the crossroads of two countries. The article studies Sarkar's unique contribution to Border Literature through his perception of 'an ending' as the beginning of true living. The study traces the poet's message of time's philosophy through the analysis of selected poems of Prakriti, Prem, Swadesh, Bidroha-Biplob-Gono Chetona. It discovers the three pillars of Sarkar's poetry: (1) the philosophy of time as evident in the poem 'Somoy', (2) the subtle social satire in 'Sovvo Samaj' and 'Dharmik Manush', and (3) the lyrical simplicity and deep emotional memories in 'Bhalobasi Ma' and 'Fire Dekha'. The study also observes his use of colloquialisms, free-verse, repetitions, and affinities with Sukanta Bhattacharya's protest poetry tradition. Moreover, the article argues that Sarkar's realistic narratives about border life, as seen in the poems 'Shahid' and 'Birotto', may be read within the framework of Postcolonial Border Criticism. His contribution to the literature of India's borders is both innovative and refreshing as he resists jingoism and, thus, represents a new alternative for teaching Indian Literature in Translation in English Honours courses. Overall, the collection is seen as a significant work that records the voice of the border Gen-Z - the one that sounds from the crossroads of two countries, addressing Indian readers in search of new aesthetics beyond metropolitan centres.
